China Proposes Ban on Yoke Steering Wheels in New Safety Crackdown

Chinese regulators are moving to tighten automotive safety rules once again — this time focusing on yoke-style steering wheels, the flat-topped designs popularized by Tesla.

Under new regulatory proposals, vehicles sold in China may be required to feature traditional circular steering wheels. If adopted, the measure would effectively ban yoke-style designs in their current form. Authorities argue that unconventional steering shapes could reduce driver control during tight maneuvers, emergency corrections or rapid hand repositioning.

The yoke drew global attention when Tesla introduced it on the Model S and Model X, replacing the conventional round wheel with a squared-off alternative inspired by aircraft controls. While promoted as futuristic, the setup received mixed feedback from drivers, particularly regarding low-speed turns and parking situations where a full circular grip can be more intuitive.

China’s latest move aligns with a broader regulatory push aimed at improving in-car safety standards. Officials have also scrutinized touchscreen-dominant interiors that minimize physical controls, signaling concern that innovation should not compromise ergonomics or driver awareness.

If the proposal becomes law, Tesla and other manufacturers experimenting with yoke-style steering systems may need to redesign vehicles specifically for the Chinese market — or consider reverting to conventional steering wheels globally to streamline production.

The development underscores a growing tension between bold design experimentation and regulatory priorities, with safety remaining firmly at the forefront.
