Land Rover is reportedly working on a more compact addition to its Defender lineup, widely expected to carry the Defender Sport name. The new model will sit below the current Defender in size and price, targeting buyers who want the brand’s signature rugged styling and off-road credibility in a more urban-friendly package.
Despite its reduced footprint, the Defender Sport is expected to retain the squared-off proportions and upright stance that define its larger sibling. Early details indicate the design will emphasize practicality and durability, avoiding the coupe-inspired styling trends common in the compact SUV segment. Chunky body cladding, a high beltline and a purposeful silhouette are likely to carry over, preserving the Defender’s recognizable identity.
Underpinning the new SUV will likely be Jaguar Land Rover’s EMA platform, which is being developed primarily for electrified applications. As a result, hybrid and fully electric variants are anticipated, aligning with the company’s broader electrification strategy. While it may not deliver the same extreme off-road capability as the full-size Defender, Land Rover is expected to ensure it maintains genuine all-terrain performance consistent with the badge.
The Defender Sport will expand the Defender family into a new segment, positioning it against premium compact SUVs while offering a more accessible entry point into the brand’s rugged lineup. Although official production timelines remain unconfirmed, the model is expected to arrive later this decade as part of Land Rover’s evolving, electrified portfolio.
If executed successfully, the smaller Defender could become a key product for Land Rover, blending iconic design cues with modern powertrains and broader market appeal.
