Porsche Reconsiders Electric Sports Car Plans as Costs Continue to Rise

Porsche is taking a closer look at its electric sports car strategy as rising development costs prompt tougher financial decisions. CEO Oliver Blume has confirmed the company may scale back or delay certain electric performance projects to keep spending in check while protecting long-term profitability.

According to Blume, electric sports cars demand far greater investment than their combustion-engine counterparts. Battery technology, software development and complex supply chains all add significant cost, and demand for high-performance EVs is still maturing. As a result, Porsche is reassessing whether every planned electric sports model makes sense in the near term.

This does not mark a shift away from electrification altogether. Porsche remains committed to EVs, including the Taycan, upcoming electric SUVs and a growing range of hybrid models. However, the brand is no longer treating electrification as a one-size-fits-all solution. In the sports car segment especially, concerns around weight, range and driving feel continue to influence product planning.

Broader industry pressures are also playing a role. Inflation, higher raw material prices and stricter emissions regulations are driving costs up across the board. Porsche is now balancing the challenge of funding combustion, hybrid and electric technologies at the same time while maintaining healthy margins.

While no specific models have been named, the comments suggest some electric sports car projects could be delayed, scaled back or reworked rather than cancelled outright. Final decisions will depend on customer demand, technology readiness and overall market conditions.
