Volkswagen has resurrected one of its most extreme creations, bringing the Golf GTI Roadster back into the spotlight more than a decade after it first shocked enthusiasts as a virtual concept. Originally revealed in 2014 for Gran Turismo 6, the GTI Roadster was conceived as a no-limits celebration of the GTI badge — a dramatic, mid-engined fantasy machine that pushed the familiar Golf nameplate into supercar territory.

Despite carrying the Golf identity, the GTI Roadster shares little with the practical hatchback most people know. The concept abandons subtlety in favor of aggression, featuring a massive front splitter, oversized air intakes and exposed aerodynamic elements. Its low, wide stance and heavily sculpted bodywork give it an almost prototype-racer presence, while the open cockpit is trimmed with race-inspired details that reinforce its uncompromising character.

When it first debuted, the GTI Roadster was powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter VR6 engine producing around 500 horsepower, with power sent to all four wheels. For a vehicle wearing a Golf badge, the performance credentials placed it firmly in supercar territory, underscoring just how far Volkswagen’s designers were willing to stretch the concept.
