BMW Global Starter Recall May Affect Cyprus Owners

BMW has launched a worldwide safety recall covering 744,234 vehicles due to a potential fire risk linked to the engine starter assembly. The campaign affects selected 2 Series, 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, 6 Series and 7 Series models, along with the X3, X4, X5, X6, X7, Z4 and i3, built between 31 July 2020 and 26 February 2026.

According to BMW, wear inside the RWT starter relay can create deposits that increase electrical resistance. In rare cases, this may cause overheating or a short circuit during engine starting, potentially increasing the risk of a vehicle fire. To resolve the issue, BMW will replace the engine starter assembly free of charge on affected vehicles.

The recall affects approximately 42,300 vehicles in Germany and more than 318,000 in the United States, making it one of BMW’s largest recent safety campaigns. Similar recall actions have also been announced across several other markets, including Europe, Australia and Canada.

Although BMW has not issued a separate Cyprus-specific announcement, owners of potentially affected vehicles are encouraged to check their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) through BMW’s official recall portal to determine whether their vehicle requires the free repair.

BMW advises owners to respond promptly to any recall notification to ensure the repair is carried out as soon as possible.
