If the Mercedes-Benz G-Class had a Chinese cousin, it might look something like this. The GWM Tank 700 has been around since 2024, but for 2026 it has received a major update, and its new flagship version now packs a staggering 864 hp.
Called the Tank 700 Hi4-Z, the luxury off roader combines a 2.0 litre turbocharged four cylinder engine with two electric motors. The plug in hybrid system produces 635 kW (864 hp) and is fed by a 59.05 kWh battery, allowing up to 190 km of electric driving under WLTC conditions.
Despite its enormous power output, the 700 needs 5.6 seconds to reach 100 km/h. That’s hardly slow, but the Tank’s huge body and off road focused construction clearly aren’t designed to turn it into a super SUV.
And this is where things get interesting. The Hi4-Z uses GWM’s newer hybrid architecture, but buyers wanting maximum off road hardware can choose the Hi4-T. It combines a 3.0 litre V6 with an electric motor and conventional four wheel drive, while adding front, centre and rear locking differentials.
Visually, the Tank 700 has all the ingredients of a modern luxury off roader: an upright, boxy body, enormous dimensions and a commanding driving position. It may not have the G-Class’s decades of heritage, but it shows just how far Chinese manufacturers are pushing into territory once dominated by established European brands.
The Tank 700 is already sold in several international markets, including the Middle East, as GWM continues expanding its Tank brand beyond China.
