It looked like the end of the road for AC Schnitzer. After almost four decades of turning BMWs into faster, sharper and more distinctive machines, the Aachen-based tuner announced in March that it would end its tuning-parts business by the end of 2026. Now, however, the story has taken an unexpected turn.
The KOHL Group has agreed to transfer AC Schnitzer to Rotterdam-based AM Group, with the deal expected to close in November. The purchase price has not been disclosed.
Importantly, this isn’t simply a company buying the AC Schnitzer name. The deal includes its technical documentation and TÜV certification files, allowing the brand to continue developing and selling road-legal performance upgrades. A new German company will oversee the operations, keeping AC Schnitzer’s German engineering identity intact.
The new chapter will be led by Imran Arshad, co-founder of Evolve Automotive and Eventuri, who becomes managing director. AM Group already owns automotive businesses including Urban Automotive, GP Products and Absolute Motors, giving AC Schnitzer access to a wider aftermarket network and manufacturing expertise.
Founded in 1987, AC Schnitzer became one of the most recognisable names in BMW tuning, offering engine upgrades, exhausts, suspension, wheels and aerodynamic components. Its connection to Schnitzer Motorsport also gave the brand a strong racing heritage.
The original shutdown plans were driven by rising development and production costs, lengthy German approval procedures, tariffs, changing customer behaviour and the industry’s shift away from combustion engines.
Existing stock will continue to be sold through the end of 2026, with KOHL maintaining warranty and after-sales support beyond that.
Instead of disappearing before its 40th anniversary, AC Schnitzer will enter 2027 under new ownership. What the reborn tuner does next could be one of the more interesting stories in the BMW aftermarket.
