BMW has unveiled the all new fifth generation X5, introducing Neue Klasse inspired styling, a redesigned interior and the widest choice of powertrains ever offered in the model’s history. The new X5 will be available with petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, fully electric and, at a later stage, hydrogen fuel cell powertrains.
The exterior features BMW’s new design language with double X LED headlights, illuminated kidney grilles and touch activated winglet door handles that improve aerodynamics. Inside, the cabin adopts BMW Panoramic iDrive with a 17.9inch central touchscreen, an optional 14.6inch passenger display and the latest BMW Operating System X with AI powered voice assistance.
The X5 40 xDrive is powered by a 3.0 litre turbocharged inline six with 48volt mild hybrid technology, producing 400 hp. Plug-in hybrid variants include the X5 50e xDrive with 489 hp and the X5 M60e xDrive with 612 hp, both using a 26.5 kWh battery and offering over 98 km of electric driving range under the WLTP cycle.
For the first time, BMW is introducing a fully electric X5. The iX5 60 xDrive features sixth generation eDrive technology, dual electric motors producing 578 hp, an 800 volt architecture and a 141 kWh (EU net) battery. BMW quotes a provisional WLTP driving range of between 645 and 845 kilometres, depending on specification, while DC charging peaks at 460 kW.
Production will begin later this year at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in the United States, with the first deliveries scheduled for late 2026 and additional variants, including the hydrogen powered iX5 Hydrogen, joining the lineup in the coming years.
