Cyprus is taking another step toward smarter traffic management, with a new project set to introduce vehicle actuated traffic signals at selected junctions in Nicosia and Limassol.
The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works is seeking bids for the supply, installation and operation of Vehicle Actuated Signal systems at 15 junctions, with seven locations in Nicosia and eight in Limassol. The tender deadline is set for 18 September, with installation scheduled to begin in early October.
The project has an estimated cost of €41,900 excluding VAT and is being funded entirely through national resources. Once work begins, the complete installation is expected to be finished within three months.
The new system will use Above Ground Detectors to monitor approaching vehicles in real time and adjust traffic signal timings accordingly. Unlike conventional traffic lights that operate according to fixed schedules, the system can respond to changing traffic conditions by modifying signal phases depending on the number of vehicles approaching each junction.
The technology is designed to reduce unnecessary waiting, shorten queues and improve journey times, while also making traffic management more responsive during periods of changing demand.
The systems will be compatible with existing traffic light infrastructure and designed to allow future expansion. The equipment will also carry a minimum 24-month manufacturer’s warranty, helping simplify maintenance once the systems are operational.
Although the project covers only 15 junctions, it represents another step in Cyprus’ broader move toward intelligent traffic management. Larger projects are already being developed to introduce adaptive traffic control across significantly more junctions in Nicosia and Limassol.
With congestion becoming an increasingly familiar problem in both cities, even relatively small upgrades could make a noticeable difference at busy intersections. Instead of relying solely on fixed traffic light schedules, the new systems will allow signals to react to what is actually happening on the road.
If the current timetable is maintained, drivers could begin seeing the first of these smart traffic signals installed from October, with the full 15 junction rollout expected to be completed within three months.
