Mini has introduced the 1998 GT Edition, the sixth model in its Icon Drops series, putting handling and driver engagement ahead of outright power.
Based on the Cooper C 2 Door, the special edition uses a 2.0 litre turbocharged four cylinder producing 161 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. Despite its GT badge, there is no power upgrade over the standard Cooper C, with drive sent through the familiar seven speed dual clutch automatic with paddle shifters.
Instead, Mini has focused its attention on the chassis. John Cooper Works suspension and brakes are fitted to improve body control, cornering response and stopping performance.
The 1998 GT is available exclusively in Midnight Black Metallic and receives GT graphics, JCW inspired aerodynamic elements, winglets and 17 inch black wheels.
The name itself pays tribute to the engine’s 1,998 cc displacement while echoing the philosophy of the original Mini 1275 GT, produced between 1969 and 1980. That car was never about chasing huge power figures either, instead becoming known for its compact dimensions and engaging handling.
The new edition starts at $36,875 in the US, before a $1,350 destination charge. Mini describes production as limited, although no specific production number has been announced. Pre orders are already open, with deliveries expected this autumn.
For European enthusiasts, the 1998 GT is an interesting reminder that Mini still sees value in lightweight, chassis-focused special editions, even if this particular version has so far been announced for the US market only.
