Hybrid cars have strengthened their position as Cyprus’s dominant passenger car powertrain, accounting for 52.4% of passenger saloon registrations during the first eight months of 2026.

According to the Statistical Service of Cyprus, the hybrid share climbed from 43.6% during the same period last year. Meanwhile, petrol cars fell from 43.2% to 35.3%, diesel slipped from 8.5% to 8%, and fully electric cars edged down from 4.8% to 4.3%.

The shift comes as the overall Cypriot vehicle market continues to grow. Total motor vehicle registrations reached 38,564 units between January and August, an 11.2% increase from 34,668 during the same period of 2025.

Passenger saloon registrations rose 10.9% to 29,902, although used cars continued to dominate, accounting for 20,576 registrations compared with 9,326 new vehicles.

Other segments also recorded growth. Goods vehicles increased 13.4% to 4,463 registrations, while motorcycles over 50cc climbed 10.8% to 3,428. Motor coaches and buses also increased, reaching 142 registrations compared with 101 a year earlier.

August continued the upward trend, with total vehicle registrations rising 8.9% to 3,777. Passenger saloon registrations increased 9.2% to 3,061.

The latest figures highlight just how quickly Cyprus’s automotive market is moving towards electrified powertrains. For now, however, hybrids are clearly leading that transition, while petrol, diesel and fully electric cars account for progressively smaller shares of new registrations.
