Cyprus to Trial AI Traffic Cameras to Combat Mobile Phone Distraction

Cyprus will begin testing artificial intelligence traffic cameras designed to detect drivers using mobile phones, as authorities step up efforts to reduce fatal road collisions linked to distracted driving

Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades announced the pilot scheme, saying police investigations have consistently identified mobile phone use as a major cause of fatal and serious crashes. Speaking in Protaras, he also highlighted plans to improve protection for vulnerable road users, including motorcyclists.

The pilot will see a single AI camera installed at a fixed location to evaluate how accurately it detects motorists using handheld devices. Unlike conventional speed cameras, the system will flag potential offences for review by a police officer before any enforcement action is taken.

If the trial proves successful, the government will prepare the necessary legislation before expanding the system. Authorities also plan to conduct a public awareness campaign ahead of any enforcement phase, with Vafeades stressing that motorists will be fully informed before the technology is introduced.

The initiative forms part of Cyprus’ broader efforts to improve road safety by using modern technology to tackle distracted driving.
