Drones to Monitor Cyprus Motorways for Traffic Planning

The Department of Public Works will use drones to monitor traffic on several of Cyprus’ busiest motorways from today Monday, June 29, until Thursday, July 9. The flights, scheduled between 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., will collect traffic data to support future road planning and congestion management.

The survey will cover sections of the Nicosia–Limassol motorway between the Alambra and Kornos exits, the Nicosia–Larnaca motorway from Lympia to the Rizoelia roundabout, and the Larnaca Airport–Ayia Napa route between the Rizoelia junction and the Xylofagou exit.

According to the department, the drones will provide engineers with a broader view of traffic movements to help identify congestion points and support future infrastructure improvements.

Officials said the drones will fly parallel to the motorways above roadside embankments and away from traffic lanes, ensuring they do not interfere with motorists. While the aircraft may be visible, they are being used solely for traffic monitoring.

The department also confirmed the project will comply with the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), with the focus on analysing traffic patterns rather than identifying individual motorists.

The data collected will help support future transport planning and traffic management initiatives across Cyprus.
