Honda is preparing an even more extreme version of the Civic Type R, with Japanese reports now pointing to 2027 production for a road going model inspired by the Civic Type R HRC Concept unveiled earlier this year.

Honda has already confirmed that a production model based on the concept is being developed as part of its new HRC spec performance strategy. The company says HRC’s motorsport expertise is being transferred into production cars, with the Type R HRC set to be the first major example.

The concept features extensive aerodynamic upgrades, including a redesigned front end, widened and vented wheel arches, deeper side skirts, a large rear diffuser and a prominent rear wing. HRC also developed upgrades to cooling, suspension, braking and the differential, while an Akrapovič exhaust completes the package.

The biggest question remains under the bonnet. Japanese reports suggest the production car could use a more powerful development of Honda’s 2.0 litre turbocharged engine, potentially drawing technology from HRC’s racing programmes. However, Honda has yet to confirm the final engine specification or power output.

HRC Performance Parts are also being developed separately, with Honda saying the racing-derived components will eventually be offered commercially. This could allow owners to adopt individual upgrades rather than buying the complete HRC model.

For now, 2027 remains a reported production target rather than an official launch date. Pricing, production numbers and final specifications are also yet to be announced.

If it arrives as expected, the Civic Type R HRC could become the ultimate evolution of Honda’s current front wheel drive performance icon and one of the most extreme road going Type Rs yet.
