Cyprus is taking another step towards improving road safety with the installation of its first artificial intelligence powered traffic cameras designed to detect drivers using handheld mobile phones. The two fixed cameras are being installed on Griva Digeni Avenue in Engomi, replacing older out of service units and monitoring traffic in both directions.
According to Traffic Police, the system uses AI technology to identify potential mobile phone offences before the footage is reviewed by a police officer, ensuring that any penalties are issued only after human verification.
The rollout forms part of a pilot programme that could eventually expand to other urban locations if successful. Authorities say the initiative aims to reduce driver distraction, which is considered one of the leading causes of serious and fatal road collisions in Cyprus.
Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades has repeatedly highlighted the dangers of mobile phone use while driving, noting that some motorists continue to use social media applications and other content behind the wheel. Alongside the AI cameras, mobile enforcement units will also increase patrols on urban roads, where the majority of collisions occur.
Authorities are also working to address the backlog of more than 360,000 outstanding traffic camera fines through new collection procedures, including improved service at police checkpoints and the possible introduction of SMS and email notifications.
