Mercedes-AMG has unveiled the all new CLA 45, transforming its entry level performance model into a fully electric sports sedan and Shooting Brake. Replacing the turbocharged four cylinder engine is an advanced tri motor powertrain that combines cutting edge technology with AMG’s signature performance.
The new CLA 45 features three axial flux electric motors, two at the rear and one at the front producing a peak output of 670 hp and 1,759 Nm of torque, while continuous output is rated at 603 hp. Power is delivered to all four wheels through AMG Performance 4MATIC+, enabling a 0–100 kph sprint in just 2.7 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 250 kph, rising to 270 kph with the optional AMG Dynamic Plus Package.
A 94 kWh battery and 800 volt electrical architecture provide a WLTP driving range of up to 670 kilometres for the sedan and 640 kilometres for the Shooting Brake. Thanks to 330 kW DC fast charging, the battery can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in around 22 minutes. To maximise efficiency, the front motor automatically disengages under light loads, allowing the car to operate primarily in rear wheel drive mode.
AMG has also developed a range of features designed to recreate the character of a combustion powered performance car, including simulated gear shifts, synthesised engine sounds and seat vibrations. Torque vectoring, active aerodynamics and AMG-specific chassis tuning further distinguish the CLA 45 from the standard electric CLA models.
The new CLA 45 marks a significant shift for Mercedes-AMG as it embraces electrification without abandoning its performance focused identity. The model is expected to arrive in European markets later this year, while Mercedes-Benz has confirmed it will not be offered in the United States.
