Volkswagen has unveiled the Tukan, a new compact pickup developed and engineered entirely in Brazil for the South American market. While its modern design and compact dimensions could make it an interesting proposition for European buyers, Volkswagen has no plans to bring it to Europe.

The Tukan will be offered in single cab and double cab forms, with the Robust single cab focused on commercial use and maximum load space. The flagship Extreme double cab takes a more lifestyle oriented approach with four doors, larger wheels, full LED lighting and additional exterior details.

Underneath, the Tukan uses a reworked version of Volkswagen’s MQB platform and becomes the first pickup based on the architecture. Its rear suspension uses leaf springs rather than the torsion beam setup found on related passenger cars, helping increase durability and load carrying capability. Volkswagen says prototypes covered more than 2 million kilometres during development.

Powertrain details are still being finalised, but Volkswagen has confirmed that the Tukan will introduce its first locally produced electrified vehicle in Brazil, with higher specification versions expected to use a 1.5 litre TSI mild-hybrid system. Conventional petrol and flex fuel engines will also be available.

Production will take place at Volkswagen’s São José dos Pinhais plant in Paraná, with 76% local content. The first deliveries are scheduled for the first half of 2027.

The Tukan forms part of Volkswagen’s R$20 billion South American investment programme, which includes 21 new launches through 2028.

For European buyers, however, the Tukan will remain a case of “what could have been”. With compact pickups becoming increasingly popular for both work and lifestyle use, this Brazilian built Volkswagen could have found an interesting niche on European roads but for now, it is staying firmly in South America.
