Volkswagen has introduced the ID. Polo GTI, marking the first time an electric vehicle carries the revered GTI badge. Previously reserved for combustion models while sportier EVs used GTX branding, this hot hatch brings fresh excitement to the subcompact segment.
The ID. Polo GTI delivers 223 horsepower and 213 pound feet of torque to the front wheels through a single electric motor paired with an electronically controlled differential. It sprints from 0 to 100 kph in 6.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 174 kph. Curb weight stands at 1540 kilograms without a driver. Compared to the standard ID. Polo’s 208 horsepower, this version gains extra punch alongside adaptive suspension and retuned steering for sharper handling. A dedicated GTI drive mode button instantly sharpens all systems and updates screen graphics.
Power comes from a 52 kilowatt hour nickel manganese cobalt battery offering up to 423 kilometers of range on the WLTP cycle. DC fast charging at up to 105 kilowatts replenishes 10 to 80 percent in about 24 minutes.
Styling turns bolder with assertive details, including red accents on the front LED light bar and honeycomb grille fins evoking racing tow hooks. It rides on 19 inch wheels with a distinctive design of silver trapezoidal cutouts. Rear changes feature a split roof spoiler and integrated two-part diffuser.
Inside, red stitching, a red marker on the steering wheel, and tartan inspired seat patterns pay homage to GTI heritage. A red logo appears below the headrests. The 10.3 inch digital cluster offers a retro mode mimicking early Golf gauges, while the 12.9 inch touchscreen adapts with nostalgic touches like cassette tape graphics.
The ID. Polo GTI arrives in Germany this fall priced at just under €39,000. Like the standard ID. Polo, it will not reach American buyers.
