McLaren Special Operations (MSO) has unveiled a faithful recreation of the legendary M6GT, bringing founder Bruce McLaren’s vision of a road going supercar back to life more than five decades after it was first conceived. The one off restoration will make its public debut at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Based on an original McLaren M6A chassis, the project combines restored period components with newly manufactured parts produced using original drawings, tooling and traditional construction techniques. The M6GT was originally developed from McLaren’s successful Can-Am race car and was intended to become one of the company’s first road going models before Bruce McLaren’s death in 1970 brought the project to an end.

The restoration includes a handcrafted rear frame, roll hoop and body panels recreated from the original moulds. Engineers also sourced period correct imperial bearings and employed authentic aerospace style riveting techniques to remain faithful to the original construction.

Power comes from a 5.7litre Chevrolet small block V8 fitted with the iconic “camel hump” cylinder heads, while the exterior is finished in Colnbrook White, paying tribute to McLaren’s original workshop. Inside, the cabin features a green leather interior inspired by the company’s early Formula 1 cars.

Rather than being offered for sale, the M6GT will become part of McLaren’s heritage collection, preserving one of the brand’s most significant projects for future generations.
