AMG Doubles Down on Combustion Engines with V8 Revival and Selective Electrification

Mercedes-AMG is shifting gears by recommitting strongly to internal combustion engines while maintaining its electric vehicle ambitions. Boss Michael Scheibe confirmed the strategy, stating the performance division aims to be more AMG than ever before by doubling down on combustion models alongside an equally strong focus on its EV lineup.

A major highlight is the return of the V8 engine by the end of the year. It will debut in SUVs and extend to other models, including the anticipated Mythos special edition based on the CLE coupe. This limited-edition collector’s vehicle features track-inspired fixed aerodynamics, similar to the PureSpeed concept. The powerplant is expected to be a high-performance evolution of the M177 Evo flat-plane crank V8 with mild-hybrid assistance, reserved for premium AMG variants rather than widespread application.

Meanwhile, the four-cylinder plug-in hybrid system, criticised in the C63 S E Performance, faces replacement by a more engaging straight-six unit. This engine already powers the refreshed GLC 53, with the GLC 43 and 63 variants discontinued, and it will also feature in the updated C-Class. Future use in the GT and SL remains undecided due to the stronger output anticipated from next-generation V8s. Certain PHEVs like the GLE 53 and E53 will continue for markets with emissions restrictions, offering a practical compromise despite added weight and boot space trade-offs from the battery placement.

Pure electric AMGs remain firmly in the pipeline. The next-generation GT four-door coupe will lead the charge, equipped with advanced axial flux motors developed by YASA and drawing inspiration from the GT XX concept. An electric AMG SUV is confirmed, with development also underway for a battery-electric CLA shooting brake and likely variants of the electric C-Class and GLC.

Scheibe explained the dual approach reflects varying global EV adoption rates. While some regions embrace electric power for its acceleration and silent operation, others maintain strong demand for traditional combustion thrills, particularly in the US. Ultimately, customers will choose the technology that best suits their preferences.
