The images making the rounds online were originally shared on X by user @You_SuiKoyoAZ, offering one of the clearest looks yet at Toyota’s latest development prototype before they were picked up by automotive media.

Rather than hiding development behind closed doors, Toyota has been unusually open about the process. Engineers have spent the past three years refining a heavily modified mid engine GR Yaris prototype, using endurance racing to test cooling, reliability and overall performance under demanding conditions.

At the heart of the project is Toyota’s new turbocharged 2.0 litre four cylinder engine, known internally as the G20E. Designed with performance in mind, the engine is expected to power several future Gazoo Racing models and has been engineered for both front and mid engine applications.

While Toyota has yet to confirm what badge the production car will wear, the strongest rumours point towards the revival of the MR2. Others believe the company could instead resurrect the Celica, or even introduce an entirely new performance model based on the same platform.

Whatever name eventually appears on the boot lid, one thing is becoming clear: Toyota isn’t finished building exciting driver’s cars. If development continues at its current pace, one of the brand’s most anticipated sports cars could finally be on the horizon.
